Visit Venice
August 30th, 2010The best time to visit this beautiful city is in the spring, when the weather starts to warm up, but before the tourists have descended. The city stretches across one hundred and seventeen small islands, and the best way to visit the sights is either on foot, or by the more expensive option, the gondola. Trips on these can be fairly expensive, but gives you a truly picturesque way of viewing the city you are visiting. Peer up narrow alleyways to see artisans making shoes and other arts, and make your way to St Marks Square, where you can chase the pigeons and see what Napoleon deemed to be ‘the finest drawing room in Europe’. It’s completely urban, as it is landlocked by water, so you will be able to relax with a drink sans the roar of the car engine, synonymous with cities in Europe. Originally a small square in front of the basilica, the square has grown in size over the following centuries, to be the large tourist attraction that it is today.
Other great things to see when visiting the city are:
The bridge of sighs – an enclosed bridge, made of white limestone that was the link from the prisons to the Doge’s palace. The view over the Rio di Palazzo was the last thing that many prisoners saw before their imprisonment. Venetian legend says that if lovers kiss on a gondola at sunset under the bridge, they will be granted everlasting love.
The Venetian arsenal – producing Venice’s maritime vessels, the arsenal was a place of mayhem in Venice’s heyday, producing all the boats that sailed from the ships port.
